Unscrupulous traders develop these systems to sell to others because they can focus on a good month which shows amazing results. They do not tell you about the downside.

Because of this the whole forex market is getting a bad reputation. But not every forex trading strategy is bad and currency trading does not have to be very difficult. It all depends on the type of person that you are and whether you are prepared to change your habits in order to become successful.

A forex trading strategy is a way to analyze the market that will allow you to identify emerging trends as fast and as accurately as possible, so that you can act on them in the early stages to have the best chance of making a successful trade.

You might begin by drawing support and resistance lines on the candlestick chart, looking for converging lines that can be an indication of an upcoming breakout.

You might then check volume of trading and an oscillating indicator to confirm your analysis. This could be the basis of a whole system, but the analysis itself is just one forex strategy that could become a part of several different systems.

Another strategy that should not be overlooked is setting a stop. This limits your losses in case the market goes against you. It acts as a safeguard so that you are never caught in a trade that could wipe out days or weeks of profits at one swoop.

Sure, sometimes the market turns around and starts going your way again, but even if it does that half of the time, it is not worth holding open a losing trade. Those that do not turn around will bite you harder.

A losing trade can actually be a benefit if you are willing to learn from it. This means not spending all of your time kicking yourself. Let go of the emotions and look calmly at what went wrong.

Analyze the signals that you acted on and identify whether you made a mistake or whether the signals were right but the strategy in this case was wrong. 

Of course, one losing trade does not mean that your system was wrong. The market is not so predictable that we can expect any forex system to be right one hundred percent of the time. This is where keeping good records is so important.

Noting down the trade that failed today may give you the information that you can use to improve your forex trading strategy a month or even six months from now.

What Is Hedging?

A hedging trade is a kind of insurance that will pay out if things go against your main trade. It can be entered into either right away at the same time as the original trade is opened, or later. The benefit of opening the second trade later is to protect profits already gained.

Assuming that your main position is in the spot forex market, the secondary or opposing trade may be in the same market or another. It could be another spot transaction either in the same currency pair or in a different but related currency pair. It could also be in another market, such as forex derivatives, that is, options or futures. Forex options is the most popular choice.

How To Hedge A Forex Trade

The first step when considering a forex hedging transaction is to analyze the risk of the original trade. It is unlikely that a retail trader would try to hedge every trade, but only those that involved unusual risk, for example a position size much greater than usual, or one where the risk changed for some reason since the trade was opened, or a mistake was made when taking out the original position.

Once the risk is known, we would subtract our risk tolerance, probably the amount of risk that we are used to dealing with in forex trading. Of course in some cases, where the trade is already in profit, it is possible to reduce the risk to zero. Otherwise the difference between risk and tolerance is the amount of risk that we need to balance out with the hedging trade.

Then we can look at the various possible strategies, including closing out part of the trade if in profit, or opening a transaction in derivatives. Decide on the strategy after considering all of the options, and act.

After a second position has been opened, it is very important to continue to monitor the markets. The situation will be constantly changing and it may be possible to close one trade, both, or parts of both at a time when you can maximize profits beyond the original plan. However, if you are making decisions on the fly, be careful not to allow the risk to increase.

Using hedge strategies does require more analysis than general forex trading. Paper trading a few hedging positions is recommended because this will help you to understand the range of possibilities and how they work.

Once in the live market, decisions have to be taken carefully without either rushing or wasting time. This is not a strategy for currency trading beginners but forex hedging has its place in the toolkit of an expert trader.

Of course, all traders know that you should set a limit order or at least include a profit aim or closing signal in your plan and keep to it. It is important not to keep a winning trade open until the moment ‘feels right’.

Either you are aiming for a certain number of pips or you are waiting for something like an oversold or overbought signal and then close immediately.

Keeping a trade open for an undefined time, hoping to make the most of it and profit from every last pip, is a road to ruin. Successful forex strategies are never based on feeling. Sure it is annoying to close out a trade at 50 pips and then see the trend continue to 200, but how often does that happen?

We tend to remember trades like that and forget the others, so if you do not keep a record of what happened after you closed a trade, now is the time to start.

If it turns out to be true then you might want to back test the results of increasing your profit aim per trade, but in 90% of cases you will find that this does not happen often enough to justify that. What you may find, however, is that it is worth closing half of your position.

Of course, to do this you must either be trading more than one lot or have a broker that accepts fractional lots. You can set a limit order for the first half but you need to be watching the market so that at that time, you can set a new limit order for the second half and at the same time, move your stop loss. The new limit order could be half of your original profit target or it could be the same amount again, but not more.

There are several options for the positioning of the new stop and it is a good idea to back test these for your particular system. First option, if your stop was originally 20 pips out from your opening position, it now moves to 20 pips from the price at which you just closed half of the order.

Second option, your stop moves to your entry position plus or minus the spread. So if the trend now turns on you, you will have a profit on the first half of your trade and break even on the second half. Third option, the stop moves to half way between the opening price and the current price.

What is best depends on the original position of your stop. Of course you do not want to move it so close to the current price that it is triggered too easily.

Equally, never be tempted to apply this technique to a losing trade. It would be a big mistake to only close half of a trade when it hit your stop, unless you are testing different positions for the stop. Forex strategies should maximize your profits, not your losses!

And yet all of us know in our hearts that it is not really so easy. Is the same thing true of forex trading?

Forex trading is currency or foreign exchange trading. It involves speculating on the rise and fall of currency prices around the world.

You exchange one currency for another because you think that the price of one will rise and fall relative to the price of the other.

For example, if the US economy is doing well but the Canadian economy is doing badly, you might want to trade the USD/CAD currency pair. You would buy the currency pair which means that you are buying USD.

One time when you might want to do this would be if there is a fall in the price of oil. Canada is a big exporter of oil and the USA is a big importer, so the value of the US dollar against the Canadian dollar is likely to rise when oil is cheap. This could be true even if the US dollar is falling against other currencies.

Of course, if you just had a couple hundred dollars in an account that you wanted to invest in this trade and you got 1 for 1 when you bought this currency pair, you would probably not make more than a few cents on the trade. Currencies just do not change in value that much that fast, at least most of the time.

So forex traders use leverage to increase the size of the sums that they can control (lots). Brokers will allow you to open a trade a position that is at least 100 and sometimes 200 times the amount that you are putting up.

This means that your $10 controls $1,000 or $2,000 in the market, or your $100 controls $10,000 or $20,000 in the market. Now the profits could be a lot bigger. This is how people make money fast with forex.

From this example you will see that forex is risky. In this it is like all speculative investment. Generally speaking, the risk increases along with the potential returns. There are safe investments like government bonds where you have a guaranteed return, but it’s low.

Then there are risky investments like stock or forex trading where you can make money fast and make a lot, but on the other hand you can lose it all. So it is important not to trade with money that you cannot afford to lose.

Fortunately forex brokers provide demo accounts where you can try out your skills and trading systems on a virtual money account until you are profiting on a regular basis.

It is necessary to practice in demo mode for a while before you go live, so forex is not something that can turn a complete beginner into a millionaire overnight.

The truth is, there is nothing that can do that outside of gambling, which is even more risky. However, once a person has learned to trade steadily and well, it is certainly possible to make money fast with forex.

Many beginners rush in and start trading wildly, thinking that they have a 50:50 chance and they can just guess which way the market will go.

Of course, this is not true. Spread or broker’s fees puts the odds against you if you just trade randomly, and nobody can second guess the forex market.

Keeping to the signal to close a trade is just as important as waiting for the signal to open one. In closing too, following your feelings is likely to lead to losses in the long term.

Some brokers do not allow scalping strategies to be used in your account with them. This is because they can make losses if you are successful. Others are fine with it.

It depends on their business model and whether they match your trades themselves. So take the time to ask around on forums for a broker who will accept this.

Longer term currency day trading strategies, where you usually leave trades open for 15 minutes or more, are accepted by more brokers.

Currency day trading requires certain special circumstances. In the first place, you will need to be online from the moment that you open the trade until you close it.

This might seem obvious but some other types of forex trading strategies only require you to check in once a day and see what has been happening in the charts in the past 24 hours. These are longer term strategies that usually follow established trends.

So a person who has very little time available might not want to get into day trading systems.

You also need to make sure that the time you spend online is free of distractions. This may mean closing the door of your den and not allowing the kids in.

It means you probably should not do day trading while you are supposed to be doing another desk job.

It means closing your email client and any tabs of your web browser that are not related to your trade (especially forums).

It means not thinking that you can play a quick game of solitaire while waiting for the next surge in the currency price. You get the picture …

Some traders hate day trading and scalping, and others would not trade any other way. The best way to find out if it is for you is to get a hold of a good currency day trading system, study it until you understand it thoroughly, and try it out in a demo account.

1. The system

Having a profitable FX online trading system is important of course. Nobody will make money if they are trying to trade the markets on intuition and guesswork.

Many people start out thinking that they have a 50:50 chance of guessing the price movement correctly even without technical analysis, but the spread changes the odds so they are against you. Test the system in a demo account and do not be afraid to ask for your money back if it does not work, although be sure you have followed all of the instructions first. Many people turn a good system into a bad one by trying to cut corners.

2. The plan

The next thing that is needed is an FX online trading plan. As well as the trading signals defined by the system, this will include stops (to minimize losses), limit order levels (profit targets), position size and anything else that may have to be decided about a trade.

Having all of this written down makes it easier to keep to the system and avoid making decisions under pressure. Most importantly, it allows you to be consistent.

It is also important to write down the results of each trade on a spreadsheet or in a notebook. That way you can easily see what is working and what is not.

3. Accepting losses

Losses will happen. There is no question about that. You cannot get involved in FX online trading and never have a losing trade.

Most people accept this in their heads, but still get affected emotionally whenever there is a loss or a series of losses.

Try not to think of a ‘good day’ as one where you profited and a ‘bad day’ as one where you lost.

Instead, a good day is one where you kept to your trading plan with absolute consistency and a bad day is one where you deviated from it.

Taking this attitude will be a big step on the path to making regular profits with FX online trading.

$__If you have been trading the currency markets for any length of time, you will probably know that just adding one new forex day trade strategy can often make a huge difference to your bottom line.

$__Even something that seems like a tiny adjustment in the way that you execute your trades can open up the way to much bigger profits.

$__Here is one technique that may do just that for you, if you implement it right. It’s a method that you can apply to profitable trades to maximize your gain from each one.

$__You will have heard over and over that you must not hang on to a winning position beyond your profit target out of greed, hoping to make more money that you need.

$__Well that is true, but at the same time there is something you can do to take advantage of those times when the trend is pushing on more strongly than you expected.

$__It is a great tactic for day trading although it would be equally valid for a longer term trade. I call it ‘trimming the scalp’.

$__All you have to do is when your trade reaches your profit target, close one half of your position.

$__Of course this assumes you are trading two lots or more, or have a broker who accepts fractional lots. This gives you the flexibility that you need.

$__So, exit half of your position. At the same time, of course, amend your stop loss order to one half of the original size too.

$__You can also move the stop loss to your original trade entry position plus or minus a couple of pips to take account of spread.

$__You have now closed on half of your profit target, plus you have a half size order open in the market that cannot lose because its stop loss is set at point zero.

$__Set a new price target and place a limit order at that point. It could be the same number of pips as your usual price target or a little less. Don’t make it more.

$__However, if you have a losing trade, do not try to apply this same strategy. Never hang on to even half of your position in a losing trade.

$__Remember, this strategy applied to winning trades will maximize your wins. So if you apply it to your losing trades it will maximize your losses … not a great idea.

$__If you apply this ‘trimming the scalp’ forex day trade strategy over all of your profitable trades, the effect should be to increase your average gain per trade without affecting your losses.

$__If you ever visit any of the many online forex forums, you will see that most every beginner trader is hoping to find some miracle currency trading strategy that will make them rich overnight.

$__In their desperate search to make money fast, newbies tend to believe that every new strategy they encounter is the one that will make them a millionaire, so they immediately ditch whatever they were doing to follow the next new system.

$__Never hang on to a losing order hoping that the movement will reverse. It probably will not, and you could be wiped out waiting. So get out, then take a good look at what went wrong.

$__You should be glad to have losses like this in the beginning because you can learn a lot more from a mistake than from a winning trade.

$__Where to set your stop can vary according to your system and the risk that you are prepared to take, but 10% is a good working figure to start with. If you find that your stop is being triggered too often, move it out.

$__Equally if you find that a shorter stop would have saved you money almost every time without being triggered by random fluctuations, you can move it in a little.

$__Does that sound too simple? Remember, the secret is not in the strategy itself but in how you implement it.

$__That’s why it is pointless to hop from system to system.

Essentially a breakout system, it tries to take advantages of new 4 week highs and lows by going long on a new 4 week high and going short on a new 4 week low. Most of the time, the 4 week highs and lows are actually indicators of a new long-term trend which can be profitable.

So what things do you need to know concerning a forex exit strategy?

For starters, initial stops are important when considering forex trading. The initial stop can get you out of the trade in the beginning if something goes wrong.

While a lot of systems have trailing stops and initial stops, a trailing stop is generally used later on in the trade if a trough or peak has formed.

With an initial stop as a forex exit strategy, a trader should have some breathing room. However, that room won’t be too large.

 If you are using a fixed percentage for your money management then the trade size will be small if the risk is too large.

Trailing stops are another kind of forex exit strategy. The trailing stops help protect your profit. They give you some elbow room so that small fluctuations won’t stop you out of the trade.

 They also protect your profits by trailing upwards in a long trade. In essence, you exit when the trade works against you.

Another forex exit strategy that is used a lot are breakeven stops. If you go into a trade with an initial and trailing stop and the currency goes in the direction of your trade, then you might use a breakeven stop which means that the price will be the same or just a little bit more than the entry price. You can decrease drawdown and improve your gains using this kind of exit strategy.

You can also use the take profit strategy in order to reduce drawdowns and improve your profitability. The market’s volatility can mean that the prices fluctuate and your trailing stop can take you out before you’ve made a profit. However, you can use the take profit strategy when a predetermined target has been reached.

Sometimes, a system will leave a trade before an economic announcement is made. So what constitutes a major economic announcement? This is when the announcement might cause a large, albeit temporary, move in the market.

An increase in volatility usually accompanies such an announcement. Sometimes this happens when the figures are announced that are substantially different than what was expected to be seen.

Should this happen, then you might be taken out at your trailing stop and there could even be gapping. For that reason, you might want to get out at the current price instead of being exited at your trailing stop.

It is just as important to have an exit strategy as it is to have an entrance strategy. After all, it is your exit strategy that will probably determine if you make a gain and exactly how much that gain might be.

While the excitement of getting in can sometimes overshadow the necessity of getting out, the forex exit strategy should not be minimized.
